Sea freight delivery by rail

Sea freight delivery by rail

Delivering sea freight door-to-door requires the use of several modes of transport. In most cases, sea freight is transhipped to road/rail transport to continue its journey towards the final destination. Every year, not only in the Port of Klaipėda but also worldwide, the delivery of sea containers by rail is becoming more and more popular, as this mode of transport has a number of advantages compared to road transport. Firstly, the fuel costs for rail transport are almost ten times lower than road transport, which means that this mode of transport is not only cheaper but also more environmentally friendly. When transporting goods by road, it is not uncommon to spend some of the time in traffic jams and at customs checkpoints, which not only increases the transport time, but also the fuel consumption. For sea freight, rail transport can avoid all this. This is why the vast majority of cargo is transported by rail from the Port of Klaipėda to your desired delivery point.

The Lithuanian railway transport complex has developed other projects related to intermodal transport:

– Amber Train – a container train transporting containerised cargo between Muuga (Estonia) and Šeštokai (Lithuania).
– Intermodal trains ‘Vilnius Shuttle’ and ‘Vilnius Express’ on the route Klaipėda – Vilnius – Klaipėda.
– Container train line from China to Lithuania – regular trains with container train status.
